Found in the Water
Oddly varied they currently can be found in many forms. Possibly the largest animal that has ever lived on earth, the bluewhale. The largest recorded individual of which weighed in at 190 tonnes or about 418,000 pounds and was just over 90 feet long.
Other animals like otters use hair instead of blubber to maintain the heat energy that all mammals produce to keep themselves warm. Thank the thousands of mitochondria in every cell for that.
Found in the Sky
Flying mammals that use short high frequency sound pulses to identify the relative locations of objects allowing flight even in low light conditions. Thsese echolocating pulses can be recorded with the proper microphone. One option is the audiomoth which can be set to record at 250 kHz sample rate fast enough to be able to pick up bat echolocation.
Bats are amazing creatures that predate insects including mosquitos. Help pollinate some flowers. You can help give bats a safe place on your property by providing a bat house that is 10 to 20 feet above the ground. June through august is the time of the year when baby bates are being reared in more temperate climates.
Found on Land
Mammals on land are also extremely varied active animals. From dangerous predators like polar bears and tigers to the small and harmless.
